Indonesia Borneo Island with a wealth of ecological and cultural treasures that survive deep within the rainforest jungle of Indonesia ’s largest island. Orangutans can be found at Two Islands in Indonesia, at Sumatra and Kalimantan. The word orangutan means “human of the forest” in the Malay language. As its habitats are being usurped by humans, the orangutan’s population is decreasing and it is ingrave danger of extinction. Some information says the population is less then 20.000 in the world. Borneo. Several National Parks at Kalimantan where Orangutans can be spot “easily”. Tanjung Puting National Park, at Central Kalimantan, here you can find them around Camp Leakey Rehabilitation Centre, and the most easily to spot place, as they are common with humans, feeding could be done. This is different with the 200.000 Hectare Kutai National Park on the east coast of Indonesia East Kalimantan province, where Orangutans live much more wild in their habitat, with some assistance of rangers and guides, mostly the Orangutan can be seen in their natural habitat of rare tropical flora and fauna. Several other species of animals exist in this Kutai national park, such as chimpanzees (Pongopygmacus), Pekantan Monkeys (Nasalisvatus), honey bear, deer, Kalimantan rhinos, crocodiles and at least 300 bird species. The forests in the area were declared a nature reserve by the Sultan of Kutai, A.M. Parikesit in 1936, covering 306,000 hectares of land.Teluk Kaba as a part of Kutai National Park is small bay lying between the cities Bontang and Sangata, reachable in 45 minutes by speedboat from Bontang. The forest at Kaba Bay is inhabited by groups of chimpanzees. The sea gardens in the waters of Kaba Bay are also very alluring. There are various colored corals and decorative fishes living in the bluish-green water. Settlements of Bajau people are found around the coastal forests of Kaba Bay, in Bontang Koala, with houses that are built over the sea.Kalimantan ’s dense jungle and wide terrain of wetlands have traditionally kept the region isolated from all but the adventurous travelers, and along the upper reaches of the rivers, beside the flora and fauna you can also discover the rich Dayak Culture. The indigenous Dayak settlements along the Rivers of Kalimantan is an ideal way to experience the incredible culture, where village elders practice traditional medicine and mark their status with intricate body tattoos and remarkably heavy ear adornments, we will be warmly welcomed guests in their traditional longhouses. At Borneo you can enjoy a sightful experience of traditional culture and grand diversity of exotic flora and wildlife from black orchids to fresh water dolphins and orangutans, and venture ashore for captivating jungle explorations and unforgettable encounters in our village visits. Join us for a once-in-a-lifetime exploration of the Kalimantan Island! The Kutai National Park Orangutan and Jungle Tour Expeditions are a collection of exploratories and Indonesia dream destination journeys that reflect the particular passions and favorite places. We created the Borneo adventure tours for those who like to trek in the deep dense jungle with it’s exotic flora and fauna.

Standing at a majestic 3726 m, Mt. Rinjani located in the North of Lombok, is the second highest peak in Indonesia. For the people of Lombok, Sasak and Balinese alike, this mountain is a sacred place where, at the summit, the holy gods live.

A large crater lake Segara Anak, located at 2000 m above sea level is the destination of many pilgrims, who make the annual trek up the steep slopes in order to place offerings to the gods in the lake itself. Within this breathtaking crater lake has appeared a new and active volcano, Mt. Barujari. On the north side of the lake is a hot spring (one of 4 Segara Anak hot springs found there) which is said to cure disease.

To climb such an impressive mountain is an unforgettable experience. Starting points for such a trek can begin at Senaru in the North (or from Sembalun from the east) ‑ this two or three day trek attacks Rinjani from the West with a descent to the awesome crater lake before again climbing up and out and on to the summit.

A model for ecotourism in Indonesia, the community-based activities are focused on the Rinjani Trek Centre in Senaru, the most popular starting point for the tough trek. Developed with New Zealand Government assistance since 1999, the Rinjani Trek Centre embodies under one roof (satu atap) the unique partnership of the National Park, tourism industry and local communities that has been forged to manage and protect the Rinjani mountain environment.

Rinjani volcano towers over the beautiful island of Lombok in West Nusa Tenggara province. Rising from the sparkling rice terraces to a dizzying height of 3,726 meters, it is the second-highest volcanic peak in Indonesia.
Only Gunung Kerinci in Sumatra is higher, at 3805 metres. Unlike the smooth cones of Bali and Java, Rinjani is more a massif than a single peak: the huge crater is some six kilometres across, and shelters a deep lake.
Rinjani volcano on the island of Lombok rises to 3726 m, second in height among Indonesian volcanoes only to Sumatra’s Kerinci volcano. Rinjani has a steep-sided conical profile when viewed from the east, but the west side of the compound volcano is truncated by the 6 x 8.5 km, oval-shaped Segara Anak caldera. The western half of the caldera contains a 230-m-deep lake whose crescentic form results from growth of the post-caldera cone Barujari at the east end of the caldera. Historical eruptions at Rinjani dating back to 1847 have been restricted to Barujari cone and consist of moderate explosive activity and occasional lava flows that have entered Segara Anak lake.

The whole of the Rinjani area was gazetted as a national park in 1997, and the mountain is one of the most prized trekking destinations in Southeast Asia.
Rinjani is located in a caldera 2.4 km by 4.8 km in size.
There are two active centres located in the eastern part of caldera – Barujari and Rombongan cones.
Segara Anak Lake is situated inside the caldera.

On 3 November 1994, a cold lahar from the summit area of Rinjani Volcano traveled down the Kokok Jenggak River.

Thirty people from the village of Aikmel who were collecting water from the river were killed.

Eruptions of Rinjani Volcano
2004, 1994, 1966, 1965, 1953, 1949-50, 1944-45, 1941?, 1915, 1909, 1906, 1901, 1900, 1884, 1847

Getting There
We can manage the transport to Senaru or Sembalun Lawang. These two village can be reached by private and charter vehicle, or by public bus. Form the west, catch a bemo to Anyar, from where bemos travel to Senaru about every 20 minutes until 4 pm. If you are coming from, or going to, eastern Lombok, get off at the junction near Bayan (your driver will know it), from where bemos go to Senaru. To Sembalun Lawang and Sembalun Bumbun, from Kali Putih to the north, a few bemos run along the rough road to both villages, usually only in the morning.

Segara Anak Lake

Segara Anak Lake is so wide it appears like the sea with its blue water. The name Segara Anak means child of the sea. Segara Anak Lake holds various mysteries and invisible power.

Eternal Flower or Edelweis
The plant or the flowers should not be taken because it grows in the park and in the mysterious world of the spirit kingdom. In the past, someone who wanted this flower must be brave enough to fight and gamble his soul. That is why the flower is called Sandar Nyawa. The flower has never wilted and is as old as the mysterious spirits.

The Peak of Rinjani
The people of Lombok believe that the peak of Mt. Rinjani is where Dewi Anjani, the queen spirit and ruler of Mt. Rinjani lives. To the south-east from the peak in a sea of dust called Segara Muncar is the invisible palace of the queen Dewi Anjani and her followers.

Mount Baru Jari
Gunung Baru is the name of the new volcano which emerged in the center of Segara Anak Lake. People believe that Gunung Baru is the navel of Mt. Rinjani. That is why if Gunung Baru erupted it will not harm the people of Lombok unless the eruption is from the peak of Mt. Rinjani.

Other Things to See or Do
Beside the mountain itself, other things for you to do or see is:
Caves
One of the three famous caves (Goa Susu, Goa Payung, dan Goa Manik), Susu Cave is a good place for self reflection and is often used as a place to meditate.

Healing Hot Springs
Aiq Kalak means hot water and it is used to cure various deseases. One of the hot springs is named Pangkereman Jembangan which is meant a place for dipping. The water which spurts out of the spring is very hot. People also use the hot spring to make medicine from coconut cream. After dipping a bottle of coconut cream in the hot spring if the liquid becomes clear oily it can be used as medicinal oil. Then the medicinal oil is used for good things and is called Siu Satus Tunggal or in Bayan language Siu Satunggal which means that it can be used to cure a thousand kinds of disease.

Segara Anak Lake
Segara Anak Lake is so wide it appears like the sea with its blue water. The name Segara Anak means child of the sea. Segara Anak Lake holds various mysteries and invisible power.

Local Strawberry
This plant grows along the route to Mt. Rinjani. It has thorns like the rose and the fruit is red like strawberry. It has a sweet and slightly sour taste and is good to eat when trekkers are hungry and thirsty.

Lovers of Bali’s environment can enjoy walking along rice terraces and feel the grass touch their skin or wash their hands in clear fresh water along the way and taste the tropical fruits whilst receiving warmest greetings from villagers and feel the heartbeat of real Balinese daily life.

To really experience this, then trekking or cycling must be your choice. These facilities are well organized tour operators in Bali since there is a high demand. There is much on offer – hiking or mountain trekking, rice paddy trekking, jungle trekking and beach trekking.

There are three favorites places for the hiker in Bali. First Mount Agung, the highest mount in Bali and considered to be the most sacred place because it has the mother temple. The trek will loop to explore the highland tropical bush and forest along beautiful Salak trees. Enjoy the sunrise and bird’s eye view of Besakih Temple. Then Mount Batur and Mount Abang. These mountains stand as a backdrop to Batur Lake, circling it from outside.

JUNGLE TREKKING
Trek through the beautiful nature reserve of Mount Batukaru – an ‘off the beaten track’ adventure that quickly immerses you into the cool shade of the tropical rainforest. You can find the hidden world of Bali’s magnificent flora and fauna as you pass by ancient strangler trees and ferns, canopied with exotic wild orchids and hanging liana, which is the home of a variety of tropical birds and animals. A picnic lunch by a clear mountain stream, breathing the spicy mountain air, will revive you before continuing on to finish at the ancient temple of Batukaru.

Or you can try Bali West National Park and choose what kind of trekking you want or try all to get all unforgettable experience.

Walk 1: Departing and ending in the National Park Office in Teluk Terima, this walk will loop to explore the lowland tropical bush and forest along the small river of Teluk Terima. The whole trek will take approximately 1 to 2 hours.

Walk 2: Departing and ending in the National Park Office in Teluk Terima, this walk is an extended trip of Walk 1to further explore the highland tropical forest of Maount Ulu Teluk Terima which is 242 meters above sea level. The whole trek will take approximately 3 – 4 hours.

Walk 3: Departure is from the National Park Office in Sumber Klampok and ends at the National Park Office in Klatakan or Ambyarsari. This route covers the lowland tropical bush and forest of Sumber Klampok (in the north part of the Park) leading up to cross Mount Klatakan which is 690 meters above sea level. Leaving the peak, the trek will loop down to explore the west part of the Park to finally end either in Klatakan or Ambyarsari. The whole trek will take approximately 5 – 7 hours.

RICE PADDY TREK
Bali’s spectacular Carang Sari rice bowl area offers a chance to see traditional rural life unchanged for a thousand years. Starting at our Adventure Centre and skirting the beautiful Ayung River valley, we follow the farmers tracks through emerald green paddy fields observing the timeless routine of plowing, planting and harvesting using hand crafted tools and age old techniques. Visit village temples and plantations of coconuts, mango and jackfruit, all to a backdrop of unspoilt Balinese countryside, before finishing at the village of Kedewatan.

Or try an alternative. Starting high in the mountains at the village of Mayungan, this twenty five kilometre ride winds its way down along valleys, passing temples and shrines and criss-crossing golden rice fields through landscape unchanged for a thousand years. You can see local Balinese culture and customs while you pass through the jungle and villages.
